AMERICA VS ENGLAND

Pavement versus sidewalk, trousers versus pants, aubergine versus eggplant; many tiny battles rage between parent language English and its errant child, American English. Of all these clashes of truth and justice, surely the least terrible is arse versus ass (the most terrible is spring onions versus scallions. It sounds as though someone has named the spring onion after a particularly cheeky child). After all, it’s merely a matter of accent, is it not? You say ass, I say arse, let’s call the whole thing off? Actually, the crack between the two words runs deeper than that; ass and arse are born of completely different roots! You can trace the history of ass back to the Romans, and the Latin word asinus, while arse is derived from Old English aers. Asinus makes the whole affair sound quite dignified, whereas if you pronounce aers in the Old English fashion (‘ae’ as in the a in ‘cat’ and the other letters as modern pronunciation) one sounds like a bad Father Jack impersonator.
